signed, sealed, delivered

guess what? i just got back from signing the lease to the apartment. it's officially mine starting june 1st!
i'm so happy.
now i have to figure out how i'm gonna furnish the place.
i have a ton of my shit being stored in at my mom's which could be great. but how to get it here?
i looked up renting a u-haul and it was outrageous (literally $1500 just for the truck, not the gas or lodging expenses).
and i've heard of renting out a space in a semi, but heard not the best things about that.
if anyone has any suggestions (or anyone that might know), i'd love some good ideas/horror stories/what have you.
thanks!

You might want to try Craigslist nyc. See if you can find a couple other people to defer the cost of a uhaul. I've heard some SCARY SHIT about moving companies .... stuff like companies quoting you one price, and then holding your shit hostage until you pay them way waaaaay more. More info on that: http://www.movingscam.com/

the uhaul quotes are always higher than they expect you to pay. when i moved east, they quoted me the same price. by calling the competitors back and forth, i got the price down to around $900 or so. if, as ariel suggests, you can team up with some other folks, the cost could become pretty reasonable. i can't remember exactly, but i believe my fuel costs were significant, around $400 or $500. that price would be much higher this year. however, i have a friend who used a moving company to get a one-bedroom from la to nyc. i recall the cost was around $5000 and they broke a bunch of her shit. when i did it, i drove about 15 hours/day and tried to sleep in rest stops as i could tolerate to save cash (i was not - as some friends had warned - murdered or robbed or forced to suck someone's dick or anything like that). from la to richmond took 3 1/2 days.
